Impressive Qing Dynasty Chinese Bronze Censer, Fu Lion Finial

Description

A substantial and decorative Chinese bronze censer, dating to the late Qing dynasty (circa 1850–1900). Hexagonal in form, the vessel features intricate relief decoration: each panel depicts birds and blossoming branches, while the base is adorned with dragons or guardian lions. The lid is topped by a finely modelled Fu Lion (Shishi), a potent symbol of protection and good fortune.

Condition:

Very good original condition with a rich natural patina. There are two small holes at the shoulder: one is the original incense vent; the other is likely a casting flaw or secondary vent, not a later damage. The surface displays minor wear, small casting marks, light oxidation, and some scratches and unevenness from age and use. No visible restoration or repair.

Height: 28 cm, width: 19 cm, weight: 2.9 kg.

Comparable censers appear in the collections of major museums and have sold at Bonhams and Sotheby’s for £1,200–2,000.
