Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Provencal furniture originated in the southern provinces of France during the 18th century, adapting Parisian court styles like Louis XV into more practical rural forms. It is characterised by flowing serpentine lines, subtle carved motifs inspired by nature, and solid hardwood construction.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense regional hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, and oak. Hardware typically consisted of hand-cast brass or bronze escutcheons and handles, paired with iron lock mechanisms.

Authentic period commodes exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, and peg construction along structural frames. Hardware cast during this era often shows minor surface irregularities and authentic patination.

A carved wood commode serves as a grounding focal point when placed against neutral plaster or painted walls. Combining the rich timber tones with contemporary artwork, simple ceramics, or clean-lined table lamps creates a balanced transitional scheme.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually to nourish the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer movement.
