Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bookcases from this era frequently feature neoclassical architectural proportions, open tier shelving, and symmetrical silhouettes. Design elements often incorporate classical motifs such as caryatids, acanthus leaves, and pilasters executed in gilded bronze or brass mounts set against dark wood veneers.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, selected for their grain pattern and deep colour. The decorative appliques were typically cast in bronze or brass and finished using fire-gilding (ormolu) techniques to create durable, lustrous metal detailing.

Authentic period ormolu mounts exhibit hand-chased surface details, precise casting marks on the reverse, and minor unevenness associated with historical hand-finishing. The gilded finish typically displays subtle wear or oxidisation in crevices rather than uniform modern electroplated brightness.

A symmetrical pair works effectively when flanking a architectural feature such as a fireplace, doorway, or large window. Placing contemporary artwork above or arranging curated decorative objects alongside traditional leather-bound volumes bridges classic and modern aesthetics.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfiber cloth, applying a neutral beeswax polish occasionally along the wood grain. Avoid applying chemical solvents or abrasive metal polishes directly to the gilt mounts, as this can strip the delicate historical gilding.
