Cast Iron Fireback Dated 1588

17th century
Description

Cast Iron Fireback dated 1588 with initials IFC. The Date 1588 celebrates the ultimate defeat of the Spanish Fleet by a much smaller English Navy aided by favorable winds and preferable tactical maneuvers which culminated in the Battle of Gravelines. A badly damaged Spanish Fleet returned to Spain by sailing north up the North Sea, and round the top of the British Isles and then heading South in the Atlantic to Spain. The Firebacks were produced in The Weald area of Southern England. This example is possibly a 17th Century Copy using the original Molds, a practice common in those days. The design is known as an Armada Fireback.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 15th century, cast iron firebacks were positioned against the rear wall of open hearths to protect masonry from heat degradation and reflect thermal energy back into the room.

Early firebacks were sand-cast using open moulds filled with molten iron, with decorative elements, initials, and dates pressed into the damp sand using hand-carved wooden stamps prior to pouring.

Authentic period examples exhibit irregular hand-cast surface textures, significant weight, genuine surface oxidisation, and era-specific iconography such as Tudor roses, rope borders, or 16th-century dates.

In addition to installation within working fireplaces or log burner niches, firebacks can be mounted on feature walls as architectural sculpture or placed in outdoor garden settings.

Loose surface corrosion should be brushed away using fine steel wool or a soft wire brush, followed by the application of traditional black lead paste or iron wax to protect the metal.
