Pair of 18th Century Italian Cherrywood Consoles

18th century
Description

Pair of 18th Century Italian Cherrywood Side or Console Tables.

These elegant tables were made towards the end of the 18th century in Italy and their plain rectangular forms with tapering square sectioned legs are ornamented with ormolu mounts above each leg, also on the side friezes, and larger central mounts incorporating stylised anthemion and a floral paterae. The tables retain their original onyx tops which are of exceptional quality and figure. Tops of this quality would have been highly prized and the maker of these tables took care to create table frames which enhanced the tops with nice ebonised detailed mouldings.

A beautiful pair of tables.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian Neoclassical furniture from the late 18th century is defined by architectural symmetry, straight lines, and classical motifs derived from ancient Greek and Roman antiquities. Console tables from this period frequently feature straight tapered legs, restrained carved ornamentation or gilt mounts, and figured marble tops.

Cabinetmakers during this era favoured native hardwoods such as cherrywood, walnut, and fruitwood, often accented with ebony or fruitwood stringing. Tops were commonly fitted with thick slabs of variegated marble or scagliola, decorated with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts for contrast.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural shrinkage across wood grain elements over time. Gilt mounts should show signs of hand-chasing, original casting imperfections, and genuine patination or light oxidisation.

A pair of console tables can be positioned symmetrically on either side of a doorway, fireplace, or long hallway to create architectural balance. Pairing them with contemporary artwork or minimalist table lamps creates a balanced juxtaposition between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean cherrywood surfaces with a soft, dry cotton cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally along the grain. Marble surfaces should be wiped with a damp cloth and mild neutral cleanser, avoiding acidic solutions that can etch or dull the stone surface.
