Aphrodite is the ancient Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty, identified with Venus by the Romans. In art, Aphrodite is frequently depicted with doves, the bird being a symbol of love, peace, and fidelity. It embodies the gentle and nurturing aspects of Aphrodite.
Augustin-Luc Demoussey was a French painter and lithographer, born on October 5 1809 in Paris and died in the same city in January 1880. The painter entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1829 where he was a student of professors Heisent and Abel de Pujol. His debut at the Salon was in 1833 where he was awarded the medal of the 3rd degree in 1837.
Many of the artist’s works have a classical romantic theme of which the painting offered is a very fine example. Augustin-Luc Demoussey’s work is rare to the market. The present work is a very decorative 19th century painting which would suite a variety of traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition report:
The painting is in excellent restored condition having been cleaned in recent times. There are areas of overpainting and retouching to the background, but generally well blended and even. The paint surface is clean and even. There is a very slight bend to the panel, but totally invisible from the front. It appears to have been stabilised at some stage. The 19th century French frame has been refurbished and is in good condition.
