18th Century Italian Walnut Tilt Top Table

18th century
Description

This is an exceptional quality late 18th, early 19th century Italian circular tilt top table. The top is made from solid walnut and is a butterfly cut piece meaning the grain is mirrored which is a stunning detail. The base is well carved with flourishes and fruit. The top tilts and sits level which is then held in place by walnut timber pegs. The patina across the top is fabulous and the the character is why I fell in love with it. Ideal as a hall table or small dining table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tilt top table features a hinged top mechanism mounted on a central pedestal, allowing the circular or oval surface to rotate vertically when not in use to save space in 18th-century living areas.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid walnut and walnut veneers, often incorporating inlaid stringing, combined with hand-carved tripod legs secured by wooden or iron latching mechanisms.

Authentic 18th-century examples typically feature hand-cut joinery beneath the top, hand-carved asymmetrical leg details, natural oxidation on untreated undersides, and period-correct catch hardware.

A tilt top table can be positioned against a wall with the top lowered for functional use, or tilted vertically to showcase the timber grain as a decorative visual feature.

Maintain the original finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly once or twice a year, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments.
