Rare Antique Shirvan Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Stunning antique Shirvan rug, in perfect condition, woven with the Islamic date 1331 which translates to the Gregorian calendar 1913.  Woven 112 years ago and full of amazing dyes and bold geometric motifs!

Condition wise, it has original fringes and all original.  Sides are secure and the wool pile is excellent on this antique rug.  Some corrosion to the black dyes, which is consistent of a rug from this age, as this black/brown dye had a lot of iron properties which has corroded over the last 112 years.

Shirvan rugs are famous for their tribal motifs and interesting tribal designs. With animals, people, yurts, and geometric motifs from lots of different Caucasian rugs.  Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvan's are generally found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shirvan rugs originate from the South Caucasus region, produced mainly during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are recognized for their intricate geometric designs, vivid natural dyes, and finely woven wool construction.

These rugs are hand-knotted predominantly using natural wool for both the pile and the foundation. The wool is dyed using traditional plant-based and mineral dyes, producing rich tones such as madder red, indigo blue, and ivory.

Authentic pieces feature hand-tied knots on a wool warp and weft, crisp geometric or stylized floral motifs, and a characteristic fine knot density. Natural abrash colour variations and slight weave irregularities also indicate genuine hand-knotted origin.

A Caucasian rug provides strong visual structure and contrast when paired with modern neutral furniture. The bold geometric symmetry works effectively in contemporary, traditional, or eclectic interior settings.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the hand-spun wool fibers. Treat liquid spills immediately by blotting with an absorbent cloth, and employ professional rug specialists for periodic cleaning.
