Antique Eastern Hand Carved Hardwood Table

19th century
Description

This is a stunning hand carved Thai table with amazing detail and a wonderful central panel depiction of the deposing of Ratsadatgirat, 12th King of Ayuttaya, an ancient kingdom in Thailand. He succeeded his father to the throne at the age of five in 1533 and was put to death by his relative Chairachathirat after being on the throne for only 5 months. The execution was done according to Palace law that is by covering the young King with a red sack before striking his neck with a sandalwood club.

The table dates from around 1900 and is in excellent condition with only a few minor losses to the outer rim that are not really that noticeable. The carved detail is exceptional and this has a wonderful rich colour and good sound condition overall.

A very useful size this measures 66cms high and 65 cms in diameter.

UK insured courier delivery can be arranged with our furniture carrier and costs £60 plus vat to most destinations.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eastern carved furniture from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries typically features dense surface relief carving depicting indigenous flora, fauna, and folklore motifs, often executed in indigenous dense hardwoods such as teak or rosewood.

These tables were constructed primarily using tropical hardwoods, including padauk, teak, and rosewood, which were favoured for their tight grain and durability when subjected to deep relief carving.

Authentic period examples exhibit subtle variations in carving depth and symmetry consistent with hand-tooling, alongside natural oxidation and wear in unexposed areas under the top and joints.

Position the piece as an accent contrast alongside clean-lined neutral upholstered seating, balancing its heavy visual texture with modern ceramics or simple lighting.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage, dust the carved crevices regularly with a soft bristle brush, and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the timber polish.
