Georgian Air Twist Glass with Etched Hunting Scene

Description

A good example of a small English wine glass dating from the late 18th / early 19th century. It has an air twist stem and a large round foot. The bowl is etched with a hunting scene showing a horse rider on one side looking inwards and on the opposite side is another rider blowing a hunting horn. It is a very good quality glass with a good weight.

It is in very good condition for its age and displays well. The are no cracks or damages to the glass. Some marks on the underside of the foot as to be expected but nothing detrimental.

Approximate Measurements :

Height : 6" / 15cm

Base Diameter : 3 1/4” / 8.5cm

A Georgian air twist glass is an 18th-century English drinking vessel featuring decorative spiral air channels trapped within the glass stem. Popular during the mid-to-late 18th century, these stems were created by drawing out glass containing prickings of air to form helical patterns.

Air twist stems were crafted using lead glass by piercing a cylinder of molten glass with tool points to create air pockets. The glass was then twisted and drawn out while hot, elongating the trapped air bubbles into delicate spiral threads before attaching the bowl and foot.
