Antique Diamond & Sapphire Double Serpent Ring – 18ct Gold – London 1902 Hallmarked Edwardian Snake Ring

1900 - 1920
Description

A truly striking antique double serpent ring, beautifully crafted in rich 18 carat gold and fully hallmarked for London, 1902.

Each serpent’s head is set with a precious gem – one with a sparkling old mine cut diamond, the other with a deep midnight-blue sapphire. The diamond is bright and lively, with excellent clarity, while the sapphire offers a rich, velvety hue. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Serpent rings became prominent in the 19th century after Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with an emerald-set snake engagement ring, symbolising eternal love and wisdom. The motif remained popular throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, often featuring entwined double serpents set with precious gemstones.

Edwardian serpent rings were predominantly crafted from 18ct or 15ct yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Gemstones such as sapphires, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds were frequently star-set or flush-set into the heads of the serpents.

Authentic pieces feature full British hallmarks, including the crown, carat mark (such as 18), city assay office mark (e.g., the leopards head for London), and a specific date letter. The gemstone cuts, such as old European or Rose cuts, and hand-carved details also distinguish genuine antique items.

Antique serpent rings function well as standalone statement pieces or layered alongside plain gold bands. Their sleek profile allows them to complement modern minimalist attire while retaining historical character.

Clean gently using lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush, taking care around gem settings. Avoid exposure to harsh household chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or abrasive polishing cloths that could wear down historical hallmarks.
