Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk is a writing table featuring a flat top supported by two vertical columns or pedestals containing drawers, leaving a central kneehole space. Popularised in the 19th century, these desks provided substantial storage and surface area for administrative work in libraries and offices.

Late Victorian pedestal desks were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. High-quality examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass drop handles, and a gilt-tooled leather writing surface set into the top.

Look for signs of 19th-century cabinetmaking, including hand-cut dovetails on the drawers, original brass lever locks, and authentic wear around the kneehole and plinths. Genuine pieces usually separate into three main sectionsthe top and two pedestalsto facilitate transport.

Position the desk centrally in a home office or study as a functional focal point, pairing it with a contemporary swivel chair or an upholstered armchair. Contrast the dark wood and green leather with neutral wall colours, modern task lighting, and minimal desktop accessories.

Dust the mahogany timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually, buffing in the direction of the wood grain. Preserve the leather inset by cleaning it with a damp cloth and treating it occasionally with a specialised leather conditioner to prevent drying.
