Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 18th century, the bureau bookcase combined a sloping slant-front writing surface with lower drawers and a tall upper cabinet for storing books and manuscripts. It served as an all-in-one workstation and secure storage unit for private studies and reception rooms.

These pieces were commonly constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and solid wood back panels. Early examples incorporate cast brass handles, escutcheons, and hand-planed fielded panels on upper cabinet doors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand tools, including irregular saw marks on rear panels, hand-cut dovetails, and genuine surface patina. Additional indicators include period-appropriate brass hardware, original lock mechanisms, and bracket feet showing natural wear along the base.

An antique bureau bookcase can serve as a focal point in a contemporary study, hallway, or living area when contrasted against neutral walls. The lower drawers offer concealed storage, while the upper cabinet can display curated ceramics, glassware, or hardback books alongside modern decorative objects.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, following the direction of the wood grain. Protect the timber finish by applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, and keep the item away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent timber warping.
