This stunning runner is a fine example of a small group of carpets and runners produced by the Caucasian weavers in the Karabagh region which reflect a European aesthetic, but with the angularity and dramatic colouring one associates with the Caucasus. At the end of the 19th century, the presence of substantial numbers of Russian military and bureaucratic personnel in the Caucasus influenced the styles of rugs and carpets that were being woven in the villages and workshops. This runner with its design of roses and dramatic golden swags is clearly a reference to French decorative styles so popular with the Russians. The brown background which has corroded in places gives the design a relief or three-dimensional effect in places. Most examples I have seen of this group have a black or dark blue background, The light brown background of our piece coupled with the pale greens, pinks and golds, makes the overall appearance lighter and less formal than other examples. Note also the simple repeating neo-classical border, another clear reference to the European ancestry of this piece. Professionally cleaned and with only some minor restoration to the brown background, this piece has has survived the generations well, and is now ready for immediate use.

Karabagh rugs originate from the Southern Caucasus region and are renowned for their distinct blend of traditional Caucasian weaving techniques and Western-influenced motifs. During the nineteenth century, these rugs frequently incorporated French and Russian floral patterns, featuring prominent roses and scrolling foliage woven on dark backgrounds.

Authentic nineteenth-century Caucasian runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The dyes were traditionally derived from natural vegetable sources, producing rich shades of dark brown, terracotta, red, and ochre that age with a characteristic patina.
