Queen Anne Burr Walnut Linen Press Cupboard

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome early 18th century Queen Anne burr walnut press cupboard dating from the first quarter of the 18th century, retaining exceptional colour, beautifully figured burr walnut veneers and a wonderfully mellow patina developed over more than 300 years.

The moulded cornice sits above a blind cushion frieze and a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing three pull-out linen slides. Beneath are two short over two long graduated drawers, all retaining attractive figured burr walnut veneers and standing on later bun feet to the front with bracket feet to the rear.

The cupboard is unusually constructed predominantly in oak, reflecting the quality and traditional construction methods of the period. The rich walnut veneers display particularly attractive figuring across both the doors and drawer fronts.

Originally built as a linen press, the piece was adapted historically from an escritoire through the removal of the fitted interior, allowing the cupboard to provide practical storage while preserving its impressive period appearance.

An elegant and highly decorative Queen Anne walnut cupboard with excellent colour, generous proportions and considerable presence.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 170 cm

Width: 120 cm

Depth: 53 cm

CONDITION

An honest, well-preserved early 18th century cupboard displaying the character expected of a piece over 300 years old.

Historic repairs include the reattachment and replacement of several sections of moulding, all sympathetically carried out and now stable. Localised areas of burr walnut veneer show some historic lifting and minor distortion, although these have largely settled and remain secure.

The piece has been converted historically from an escritoire through removal of the fitted interior and installation of the linen slides. The drawer handles and rear feet are later replacements, while the front feet exhibit historic woodworm that appears long inactive and does not affect structural integrity.

The drawers run smoothly and the cupboard is solid and stable throughout. Three keys accompany the cupboard: one operates the cupboard doors, one the drawers, and a smaller key is believed to relate to the former fitted interior.

Overall, this is an attractive and highly decorative early Queen Anne walnut cupboard with superb colour, impressive burr walnut veneers and the honest signs of age expected from a genuine early 18th century example.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Queen Anne linen press is an 18th-century storage cabinet designed with an upper double-door cupboard section for storing household linens and a lower chest base containing drawers.

These storage pieces were constructed with solid wood frames, often oak or pine, coated in figured timber veneers such as burr walnut, and finished with brass drop handles and key escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed drawer linings, original brass drop handles, turned bun feet, and natural surface patination across the burr walnut veneer.

Position the cabinet as a focal storage piece in a hallway, dining room, or bedroom, contrasting its substantial visual weight against neutral contemporary walls.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply a clear beeswax polish annually along the grain, and keep the furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer movement.
