Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chiffonier is a small sideboard furniture piece developed in the early 19th century, characterised by a low cupboard base and a raised upper shelf supported by turned uprights. Victorian examples frequently featured flame mahogany veneers, arch-panelled doors, and carved decorative accents.

Victorian chiffoniers were predominantly constructed using solid timbers such as pine or oak faced with rich mahogany or walnut veneers. Standard construction features include hand-dovetailed drawer joints, brass locks, turned bun feet, and carved corbels supporting the frieze.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including minor timber shrinkage, hand-cut dovetails, original cast-iron or brass lock mechanisms, and uneven oxidisation on unexposed wooden surfaces. The presence of pedimented backboards, flame mahogany panel inserts, and turned spindles also aligns with 19th-century manufacture.

A small chiffonier works well as a focal storage piece in an entryway, dining alcove, or living room. The top surface provides space to display contemporary ceramics or table lamps, balancing historic timber tones against neutral or modern wall finishes.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish. Avoid place items in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent cracking, veneer lifted edges, or timber fading.
