Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian display sideboard, or chiffonier, emerged in the nineteenth century as a decorative storage piece featuring a lower cupboard base paired with a multi-tiered, mirrored upper structure. Often incorporating intricate inlay work, carved galleries, and turned supports, these pieces were designed to display fine porcelain, silver, and glassware in formal dining rooms and drawing rooms.

These sideboards were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany. Marquetry and parquetry details were inlaid using contrasting timbers like satinwood, boxwood, and ebony, while upper structures incorporated silvered plate glass mirrors and solid brass hardware.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original bevelled mirror glass showing slight silver oxidisation, and hand-fitted wood inlays. The underside and back panels generally show hand-sawn timber marks rather than modern uniform machine cuts.

In modern interiors, a Victorian display sideboard functions as a focal point against neutral or dark moody wall tones. Styling the open shelving with curated modern ceramics, books, and minimal glassware bridges the historical aesthetic with modern design.

Maintain antique marquetry by keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight, which cause timber to dry out and inlays to lift. Clean surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the wood grain.
