Description

Vanity-bags or 'chantehs' as they are known in Persian, were highly-prized possessions amongst the women of the Persian tribes and were never intended to be sold. With the advent of commercialism in the early twentieth century, bags like this have been sold amongst the tribes when plastic and gunny sacks were an easier option! The nomads today, have now lost their ancient weaving heritage and few bags like this can now be found amongst the nomads in Iran, very sadly.

This magnificent chanteh was made by the Arab Nafar tribe within the Khamseh Confederacy in Fars province, south-western Persia, circa 1870-1880. The natural, undyed, woollen, ivory ground contains a popular design amongst the Nafar tribe, illustrating four chickens pecking at seeds on the ground. The bag is in very good condition, complete with a plain-weave back, in narrow bands of red and dark-blue colours.
