A well composed and decoratively framed oil-on-canvas painting by the Russian born and listed painter Maria Vladimirovna Wolkonsky (nee Louguinine). Well-constructed with an accomplished sense of perspective and compositional balance, the painting depicts boats on a lake in rural France.

Moscow-born artist Maria Vladimirovna Wolkonsky was an author of secular portraits and landscapes. The wife of Prince A. Volkonsky, she was the mother of the artist P. Volkonsky. She later studied at the Grand Chaumiere Academy in Paris and took part in the Spring exhibitions in the halls of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, the salons of the National Association of Fine Arts and the Tuileries in Paris (1910s).

From 1917 she lived and worked permanently in France where she composed a number of landscape paintings, and we think the painting is most likely from the Provence region but we''ve not been able to identity the exact location.

The painting is well balanced and demonstrates the painter’s use of a distinctive range of soft tones and vibrant colours that typified the artist’s work. There is a sense of light and serenity within the composition which shows influence of French Post-Impressionism.

Condition report: In good, clean and largely original condition. There is some minor age-related fine cracking to a few areas of the paint surface and faint areas of craquelure, entirely commensurate with its antiquity. Overall, the painting is in good condition and the paint surface is stable and the canvas is in good tension.
