Antique Sarouk Farahan Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine and beautifully detailed antique Sarouk Farahan rug, with an intricate boteh design in the main field, flanked by four corner spandrels in red with lovely 'abrash' the Persian word for dye change.  As this rug was woven around 120 years ago, dyes oxidise and have faded over the last century, adding character and vivid charm.  Some excellent greens and pale blue dyes, with a natural off white wool main border, this lifts the rugs palette too.  Ideal for a bedroom, in front of a fire, study or entrance hall.  Every one of our carpets, rugs and runners are supplied with the best anti-slip underlay included in the price.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,  Sarouk Farahan or Fereghan rugs and carpets like this constituted some of the most impressive examples of the great revival of classical Persian rug weaving, far more so than the Sarouk carpets of subsequent generations. Here a grand scalloped circular medallion with what appears to be a crown with jewels at either end, sit with the ivory corner spandrels that are uplifting to the rest of this fine rugs palette. The lush, lustrous pile provides the perfect complement to the overwhelmingly delicate coloration of soft saffron yellow, ivory and red tones.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sarouk Farahan rugs originated in the Arak region of Persia during the late nineteenth century, known for their dense knotting, low pile, and classical floral patterns arranged on dark navy or deep red fields.

These traditional carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade wool pile on a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural plant-derived dyes.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-tied asymmetrical knots, a depressed warp structure, natural abrash colour variations, and detailed floral motif execution across the field and borders.

A hand-woven Farahan rug provides structural grounding and colour contrast when paired with contemporary neutral seating, dark wood cabinetry, or tailored leather furniture.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating brush bar, rotate the carpet annually to balance foot traffic wear, and treat spills immediately using neutral detergent and cold water or professional rug specialists.
