Description

A smart ebonised and gilt heightened aesthetic desk by Hindley and Sons of Oxford St, circa 1870.

Of inverted breakfront form and with Hobbs locks, Mahogany and Cedar lined drawers and original tooled hide.

In very good condition; various slight knocks, lacking one lock, one handle with slight loss and the rear has dulled over the last 150 years.

This desk is in one piece.

Maximum kneehole height is 61cm.

Maximum kneehole width 51cm.

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late 19th century, promoting art for arts sake and prioritising visual harmony, craftsmanship, and simplified forms over heavy Victorian ornamentation. Ebonised finishes and gilt line detailing became hallmark characteristics of this movement, drawn from Anglo-Japanese design influences.
