A decorative Italian School 17th century oil on canvas depiction of The Capture of Samson.
In this story of love and betrayal, Delilah discovers that Samson’s extraordinary strength lay in his hair and reveals the secret to his persecutors. She cuts off his hair while he is sleeping and then delivers him to his enemies, the Philistines. The dramatic scene is beautifully portrayed in this particular work, which is wonderfully theatrical in its composition and execution.
The present work appears to use a composition by Peter Paul Rubens as a model but is unique in its execution and technique. The exaggerated, stylized execution of the painting combined with the contorted poses and suggest a Mannerist School influence, reminiscent of the work of Pietro D’Asaro (1579-1647). Pietro D'Asaro known as called "Monocolo di Racalmuto" was an Italian Mannerist painter in Sicily. The painter, who came from Racalmuto in Sicily, was possibly a pupil of Zoppo di Gangi.
Condition report: The painting has been cleaned and had some restoration in recent times and has been laid into a new canvas and restretched. There is craquelure throughout. There are a few small stars of infill and retouching. The frame is new and commissioned for the painting and is of a good quality and is offered as a gift.
