Victorian Wingback Armchair

19th century
Description

A Victorian wingback armchair professionally reupholstered in a geometric pattern teal fabric, with complimentary teal velvet to the back and sides. The chair has a buttoned back and an attractive curvy outline, with turned mahogany forelegs standing on the original ceramic castors. A comfortable and beautiful chair.

Our upholsterer has done a fantastic job on this chair, and everyone that sees it comments on how nice it looks. Its definitely one I’d keep if I had the room for it!

Condition: Newly reupholstered so in excellent condition. There are some minor marks and scuffs to the legs.

The seat height is approximately 45cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian wingback armchair is a high-backed upholstered seating piece originating in the nineteenth century, designed with protruding side panels or wings intended to protect the occupant from draughts and retain heat from an open fire.

These chairs were constructed using solid timber frames, such as oak or mahogany, filled with natural padding like horsehair and coil springs, and finished with woven upholstery, turned wooden legs, and metal castors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved turned or cabriole legs, original brass or iron wheel castors, heavy timber framing, and evidence of traditional upholstery techniques such as hand-tied springs and deep buttoning.

Placing a Victorian wingback chair alongside modern floor lamps, neutral backdrop walls, or minimalist side tables creates a balanced interior scheme through textural and historical contrast.

Upholstered antique armchairs should be vacuumed regularly with a soft brush attachment, positioned away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and the exposed timber legs conditioned with suitable wood wax.
