A wingback armchair is an upholstered easy chair characterised by high side wings extending down to the armrests, originally designed to protect the sitter from draughts and retain heat from an open fireplace.

Traditional 19th-century wing chairs were constructed with solid timber frames such as walnut or mahogany, fitted with steel coil springs, natural hair padding, and upholstered in woven fabrics like damask or velvet.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-carved solid wood legs, hand-stitched upholstery under-layers, mortise-and-tenon frame joinery, and natural wear patterns on the wooden feet.

A period wing chair can be styled alongside a modern floor lamp and side table to establish a dedicated reading space, or placed in a living area to contrast clean contemporary furniture.

Damask upholstery should be vacuumed gently using a soft brush attachment, kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and blotted with a dry cloth immediately if spills occur.
