Queen Anne Design Walnut Wing Armchair C. 1880

19th century
Description

A stunning 19th century walnut wing armchair newly upholstered in ‘Shantung Antique Gold’ heavyweight upholstery fabric by P Kaufmann.

The chair is sturdy and comfortable with wonderful long cabriole legs to front terminating in wide trifid feet with carved scrolls at the hips and well shaped spandrels.

The chair is of a good height and the seat height is 20.75 inches.

Very supportive, firmly padded with a squab cushion, this would be perfect for a fireside or desk chair.

Rich warm colour to the walnut frame, a few minor dings and a spandrel has been refitted at some point – but is original - nothing substantive or noticeable and no worm.

A very high quality and beautiful 19th century wingback chair.

Dimensions are:

Height from floor to seat is 18 inches, height from floor to top of seat pad is 20.75 inches, depth of seat is 15.75 inches. Overall height is 41 inches, depth is 27 inches and maximum width is 27 inches.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Queen Anne style, originating in early 18th-century Britain and revived during the late Victorian era, features gentle curves, cabriole legs, pad feet, and a high-backed silhouette with side wings designed for draught protection.

Late 19th-century examples typically combine solid walnut or mahogany frames with traditional upholstery methods, including hand-tied steel springs, horsehair filling, and woven silk, satin, or velvet fabrics.

Look for hand-carved cabriole front legs, pegged or corner-blocked frame joinery beneath the upholstery, genuine timber oxidisation, and late 19th-century construction marks along the underside.

Place the chair as a standalone accent piece in a reading corner, study, or living room, pairing its curved traditional form with neutral modern textiles or minimalist side tables for visual contrast.

Vacuum delicate silk upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment and avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading. Clean walnut legs with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically to preserve the wood finish.
