Description

A very rare and charming small, square rug, made by Ersary tribes in the middle Amu Darya region of Turkmenistan, circa 1870.

I suspect this was made as a wedding rug for the bride and groom to stand on when taking their marriage vows.

The beautiful, glowing natural brick-red ground comprises a large Ersary 'gul' or tribal crest in the centre and surrounded by a turquoise border containing a continuous vine pattern - symbolising the eternal cycle of life. Both ends have an extra panel or 'elem' containing nine, small, stylised flowers finishing with narrow bands of plain-weave.

In excellent condition with no repairs whatsoever, this is a highly collectible little rug.
