Cold Painted Art Nouveau Bronze Bust by Hans Stoltenberg Lerche (1867-1920)

1900 - 1920
Description

A good cold painted Art Nouveau bronze of "Eglantine" with her dress painted in green and the floral decoration in gold gilt.

The bronze is integrated onto a rouge marble pillar with a plaque attached inscribed "Eglantine par H St Lerche"

Eglantine is quite beautiful with an air of peace and in very good condition.

Biography.

Hans Stephan Stoltenberg-Lerche was active as a sculptor, painter and craftsman. His artistic interests were broad, figurative ceramics, jewelry, metalware and most recently glass are part of his oeuvre.

Stoltenberg-Lerche was a Norwegian citizen, but grew up in Germany, where he trained as a ceramist. He later studied sculpture in Naples and Paris and became a student of the painter Ernest Carrière. His designs were in great demand among Parisian publishers, and he created numerous models in ceramics and bronze. He also produced a large number of works for the Viennese manufactory Goldscheider.

His figurative vessels brought him great recognition at the turn of the century. Among other things, he received a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair and participated in the 1st International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art in Turin in 1902.

In 1911, the Muranese glass manufacturer Fratelli Toso, otherwise known for serial decorative works in the traditional style, hired the renowned artist. With the help of master glass blower Vittorio Toso, Stoltenberg-Lerche, who had settled in Rome since 1900, translated his artistic ideas into what was for him an unfamiliar material. The result was unique, never-before-seen vessels with atmospheric, impressionistically abstracted scenes.
