A Mid Century Still Life Tempera Painting by Stuart Armfield R.A

1940 - 1960
Description

A fine large tempera painting on a hand made wooden panel by the highly acclaimed British artist Stuart Armfield, (1916 – 1999).

Painted in egg tempera, a medium this artist was well known for, and wrote books on the subject.

This mid century stylised still life painting is of various unusually coloured flowers standing in a glass vase on a marble table against a mountain landscape with clouds above.

This unusual artwork is very much of its time and dates to circa 1950.

The painting is displayed in its original painted wood frame. All of the elements in this picture are in good condition.

This is a rare opportunity to own an interesting high quality painting by this highly thought of British artist.

Stuart Armfield (1916–1999)

Painter, notably in tempera, was born in Sanderstead, Surrey. He studied at West of England College of Art, Bristol, and was from 1935–40 on the art staff of Ealing Studios. Films worked on included Gracie Fields’ Sing As We Go, 1934, and George Formby’s I See Ice, 1938. During a short contract at a Paris film studio, from his cousin Maxwell Armfield, he learned the tempera technique. Wrote the manual Tempera Painting. Showed at RA, with St Ives Society of Artists of which he was a member, Arthur Jeffress Gallery, RWS, and in America. Lived in Looe, Cornwall, and later in Plymouth, Devon. After World War II, Armfield produced Symbolist pictures that featured black models, chessboards, and keys, sought by collectors such as King Hassan of Morocco, the exiled Prince Chula of Thailand, and the actor Eric Portman.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Egg tempera is an ancient painting medium revived by mid-20th-century artists who valued its fast-drying properties, precise detail capability, and luminous matte finish for botanical and still life compositions.

Artists create egg tempera by mixing hand-ground dry pigments with egg yolk and water, applying the medium onto prepared wooden panels or rigid boards in thin, meticulous layers.

Authentic pieces exhibit a non-glossy surface, extremely fine brushwork detail, period artist signatures, and original mid-century board backings or frames.

Position the artwork centrally above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table, pairing it with clean-lined contemporary or mid-century timber furniture to highlight the botanical subject.

Display tempera paintings away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent pigment fading or panel warping, dusting the frame lightly with a soft dry cloth.
