Edwardian Inlaid Bureau Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

Edwardian Inlaid Bureau Bookcase

A timeless Edwardian inlaid mahogany bookcase, elegantly designed with an astral-glazed upper section housing three fully adjustable shelves, ideal for displaying books or treasured items. Below, a drop-down writing leaf reveals a beautifully fitted interior complete with a tooled green leather insert, perfect for writing or correspondence.

The central section features a long drawer with decorative metal handles, while the lower cabinet opens to reveal a spacious interior behind two panelled doors. The entire piece stands on traditional bracket feet and separates into two sections for ease of transport and installation.

This solid and sturdy piece boasts a rich patina that speaks to its age and character. While there are some minor cosmetic marks, bumps, and small areas of missing trim - particularly on the lower right-hand door and back right leg veneer - these do not detract from its overall beauty or functionality.

A practical and elegant storage solution, this bookcase is as useful as it is visually impressive, making it a perfect addition to both period and modern interiors.

Dimensions 97.5cm wide x 46cm deep x 203.5cm high and 72cm high to desk top

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian bureau bookcase is a dual-function piece of storage furniture manufactured during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910). It combines a lower slant-front writing desk with an upper glazed bookcase cabinet, often constructed from mahogany with delicate marquetry or line inlay.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using mahogany, walnut, or satinwood, frequently featuring decorative ebony or boxwood stringing inlay. Glazed glass panels, brass drop handles, and hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers are typical construction highlights.

Authentic Edwardian examples display lighter, more delicate proportions than heavier Victorian predecessors, featuring neoclassical inlays and geometric glazing bars. Examination of drawer linings reveals hand-drawn dovetails, period brass hardware, and natural timber oxidisation on unfinished rear panels.

A bureau bookcase functions effectively as a focal point in a home office, hallway, or living space. Leaving the drop-front desk open creates a functional workspace, while displaying ceramics or curated books behind the glazed upper doors blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary styling.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
