Edwardian Inlaid Bureau Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

Edwardian Inlaid Bureau Bookcase

An elegant Edwardian inlaid mahogany bureau bookcase, featuring a decorative ornate cornice and twin astragal-glazed doors enclosing two fully adjustable shelves, perfect for displaying books or treasured items. Below, the fall-front bureau opens to reveal a fitted interior, ideal for writing or storage, while three spacious drawers with decorative metal handles provide further functionality. The piece stands gracefully on classic bracket feet.

With its refined proportions and fine inlay detail, this piece exudes timeless charm. It has developed a lovely patina through age and use, adding warmth and character. There is some fading to the front elevation, and a small section of wood is missing from the upper right side of the bookcase (see photographs), and some veneer missing from the bracketed feet, though these imperfections do not detract from its overall beauty or integrity.

Solid and sturdy, this bureau bookcase is both decorative and practical—a true testament to Edwardian craftsmanship. For ease of movement and transport, it conveniently separates into two sections.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian bureau bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of storage furniture originating from the early 20th century, combining a slant-front writing desk with an upper glazed display cabinet.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often featuring delicate satinwood stringing, marquetry inlays, dovetail jointed drawers, and hand-fitted astragal glass doors.

Authentic Edwardian examples display clean classical proportions, lightweight neoclassical marquetry or crossbanding, original brass drop handles, and naturally aged wood patination.

Place the unit in a study or living area as a functional workspace, using the upper glazed shelves to display contemporary ceramics or books alongside traditional decorative objects.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent inlay warping.
