Description

Diminutive size and unusual drawer arrangement lend this miniature coffer immediate appeal and great charm.

Made from attractively figured native oak and of waisted form, the coffer has a single piece lid above four, scratch-moulded panels and three little drawers, on shaped bracket feet.

The handles are original, the escutcheons are later but in appropriate style.

Probably Glamorganshire, circa 1790 - 1820.

Originating in 18th-century Wales, a coffer bach (meaning small chest) is a miniature version of a full-sized coffer, traditionally presented as a marriage gift or used to store valuable linens, silver, and personal documents.

Georgian coffers were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, elm, or walnut, held together using hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and brass hardware.
