Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Open salt cellars were individual or paired dining accessories designed to hold loose salt before the widespread introduction of free-flowing salt shakers in the 20th century. During the late Victorian period, cased sets were frequently presented as commemorative or wedding gifts.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid sterling silver, with interiors often featuring a gilt (vermeil) finish to protect the metal against sodium chloride corrosion. Fitted presentation cases were crafted from wood covered in leatherette and lined with silk and velvet.

Authentic British pieces bear a full set of silver hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the makers mark, purity mark (lion passant for sterling silver), assay office mark, and a date letter corresponding to the exact year of manufacture.

Open salts can be placed at individual table settings alongside contemporary dinnerware for formal dining. Alternatively, they function as small trinket dishes on a dressing table or bedside cabinet to hold rings and small jewellery items.

Salt should be emptied immediately after use, followed by gentle washing in warm soapy water and thorough drying with a soft cloth to avoid pitting. Abrasive polishes should not be applied to gilded interior surfaces, as rubbing can strip the thin gold layer.
