Large Enamel Painting on Copper. L'Homme Au Casque D' Or. Signed fine gold script lower right, R. Martinaud, Limoges; To: J. J Laveissiere.

Exquisite antique Limoges Enamel on Copper titled L'Homme Au Casque D' Or d. After Rembrandt.

The painting is after Rembrandt's famous portrait of the man / conqueror with the golden and plumed helmet [The Man with the Golden Helmet]. The quality of this extraordinary large enamel on copper is superb. Extremely finely painted in difficult technique, with in-depth enamel work. Mounted in its original frame, with further frame, and engraved plaque.

*The Man with the Golden Helmet (c. 1650) is an oil-on-canvas painting formerly attributed to the Dutch painter Rembrandt and today considered to be a work by someone in his circle. Limoges enamel refers to a vitreous enamel technique developed in Limoges, France, involving the application of powdered glass pigments onto a metal backing prior to kiln firing.

These works are crafted by preparing a copper sheet, applying counter-enamel to the reverse to prevent warping, and meticulously painting multiple layers of pigmented vitreous glazes that are each fired individually.
