Delightful Georgian Silver Tulip-shaped Caddy Spoon by John Thornton, Birmingham 1790

Description

This exquisite George III silver caddy spoon is dated Birmingham 1790 and was made by the renowned Birmingham toy maker * John Thornton. The tulip-shaped bowl engraved with floral designs a a finely stippled background. The handle with bright-engraved designs surrounding a vacant reserve. The plain back fully hallmarked.

* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.

Hallmarks:

It for John Thornton.

Duty Mark.

Lion Passant.

Birmingham Assay Mark.

Date letter "S" for 1790.

Excellent.
