Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, born in 1881, was a Turkish field marshal and revolutionary statesman, the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. He led the Turkish nationalist movement against the Allied forces that sought to divide the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Atatürk implemented sweeping reforms, modernizing Turkey into a secular, industrializing nation. He died in 1938 and is revered in Turkey as the founder of the modern republic.
