Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Davenport desk is a compact 19th-century writing desk characterised by a sloping writing surface and a side-mounted bank of drawers. Originally named after Captain Davenport who commissioned the design from Gillows of Lancaster, it was created for space-conscious interiors and travel.

George IV Davenport desks were constructed predominantly from solid mahogany or rosewood veneers. Key functional elements often include gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass gallery rails, and hand-carved feet or columns.

Authentic George IV Davenport desks feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, original brass locks, and period-appropriate castors or carved feet. Proportions are typically compact, showcasing flame mahogany or decorative timber figuring consistent with early 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk functions well in a home library, study nook, or hallway. It pairs effectively with modern minimalist chairs or classic leather seating, serving as both a functional writing station and an accent piece.

Maintain the finish by applying a high-grade beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly, avoiding silicone-based sprays. Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and leather cracking.
