Delftware refers to Dutch tin-glazed earthenware produced predominantly around the town of Delft in the Netherlands from the sixteenth century onwards. Developed initially as an affordable European alternative to imported Chinese blue and white porcelain, it became renowned for its characteristic cobalt blue hand-painted decoration over a white glaze background.

Traditional Delftware is made from earthenware clay shaped on a potters wheel or slip-cast in moulds.
