Description

Fine quality late Regency mahogany pedestal pembroke table, in the manner of Gillows. Good small size and elegant proportions. Drop leaf top over a cockbeaded drawer fitted with a brass ring handle. Raised on a turned column with reeded vase shaped baluster, and four hipped splay legs terminating in brass castors.

A Pembroke table is a compact drop-leaf table designed during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, named after the Countess of Pembroke. During the Regency period, cabinetmakers adapted the classic design by placing the tabletop on a central turned pedestal with splayed quadruped legs rather than four individual corner legs.

Regency Pembroke tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, prized for their rich colour and stability. Secondary timbers inside drawers often included oak or pine, while fittings were made from cast brass.

Authentic pieces feature period construction markers such as hand-cut dovetail joints on the frieze drawer, hand-planed secondary wood linings, original brass castors, and natural patination across the timber surfaces.

Due to its adaptable drop-leaf mechanism, a Pembroke table functions effectively as an end table beside a sofa, a compact bedside table, or an occasional desk. Extending the side leaves provides additional surface space when required while conserving floor area when folded down.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the moisture balance. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish degradation.
