Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torchere is a tall, free-standing pedestal created during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to hold candelabra or oil lamps. As domestic lighting evolved, these items transitioned into decorative stands for displaying sculptures, vases, and house plants.

Traditional torcheres were constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, shaped using wood-turning lathes to form the central column. Decorative embellishments frequently included cast brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, hand-carved detailing, and tripod bases designed for stability.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery, irregular tool marks on unexposed undersides, and natural surface wear around the base and top rim. Reproductions often feature uniform machine screws, synthetic lacquers, and lightweight cast metal fittings lacking fine hand-chased detailing.

A tall torchere can be positioned in an unused room corner or alcove to introduce vertical interest to an interior scheme. Placing a trailing indoor plant, a contemporary ceramic vessel, or a bronze sculpture on top creates an engaging focal point that connects historical and modern aesthetics.

Dust the wood regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to protect the finish. Metal mounts should be kept free from moisture and cleaned gently with a dry soft-bristled brush to preserve the natural patina.
