Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gilt bronze wall sconces, often referred to as wall appliques, are decorative lighting fixtures mounted to walls. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries in France, particularly during the Louis XVI and Empire periods, these fixtures feature cast metalwork with gilded finishes and classical architectural motifs such as urns, flames, and reeded scrolling arms.

Authentic period sconces were typically cast in bronze or brass using the lost-wax or sand-casting process. The metal was then chased by hand to refine details before fire-gilding (ormolu) or lacquer was applied. Internal cavities and hollow arms allowed for concealed electrical wiring during later 20th-century conversions.

Look for heavy cast metal weight, crisp hand-chased details, and signs of historical hand-assembly such as threaded steel rods, square nuts, or hand-cut screws. Authentic gilt finishes display natural oxidation, patina in recessed areas, and mild surface wear consistent with age rather than uniform modern spray finishes.

Position wall sconces in pairs flanking a mantlepiece, sideboard, or bathroom vanity mirror to create symmetrical ambient lighting. Contrasting warm gilded metalwork against contemporary matte paint colours or dark textured wallpaper highlights the architectural silhouette of the metalwork.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft bristles brush to prevent buildup in detailed chasing. Avoid chemical polishes, abrasive pads, or water-based cleaners, as these can strip original gilding or lacquer coatings; consult a specialist restorer for deep cleaning.
