John Falconar Slater (1857-1937) was a landscape, coastal, marine, portrait, animal, flower and street scene painter who worked in both oil and watercolour. After working in his fathers corn mill for some years he returned to Tyneside to become a full time professional artist. He exhibited widely, in London at the R.A. (22), also at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool (5), Manchester City Art Gallery, the Laing Art Gallery and others.
The present painting ''The Last Load'' is a good example of Slater''s work. An atmospheric oil painting on board measuring 19''x 27'', it is signed lower right and is dated 1882. It is framed in a gilt frame measuring 28''x 36'' overall.
