Description

Large French Art Nouveau Mantel Clock and Garniture

This impressive clock set features a woman and child holding a floral branch with a bird perched above.

A striking centrepiece, the figures are cast in bronzed spelter and stand on a beautifully variegated marble adorned with gilt ormolu.

The clock face has a pretty painted dial with Arabic numerals and a brass bezel. It retains the original hands. The maker's name A. CARRE from Niort is marked on the dial.

The eight day movement strikes on the hour and the half hour and the movement is in working order.

The matching garniture / candelabra each hold five candles and stand on gilt ormolu feet.

The stamp 'Fabrication Française Paris Made In France' is on the woman's dress.

All in very good condition with only one small repair to the branch held by the child.

Key supplied.

French Antiques and Objets d'art

We specialise in French antiques and work with interior designers, trade and retail in the UK and worldwide. Every piece is examined and restored when necessary to a very high standard by a professionally trained restorer with years of experience.

We have an online store and viewing in person is unfortunately not an option. If you wish to return an item please send us written notification within 48 hours of receipt. Returns can be made up to 14 days after delivery. The item must be returned in the same condition as it left and a full refund less any delivery and return delivery costs incurred by us will be issued.

Packing and Delivery

We ship larger pieces, such as tables and washstands, with specialised couriers and smaller pieces, such as sculptures and lights, with FedEx or the post.

We take great care to ensure that our pieces are well-packaged for transport. Deliveries take on average between 1 week and 3 weeks (possibly longer, depending on your location, times of year and any other factors).

We have stock in Kent and France and can provide quotes to deliver from both stores. Should a piece need importing from France, the price would be DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to include shipping, UK import VAT and customs clearance; there are no hidden costs. Please contact us by email or Whatsapp Link if you need a quote.

Payment

We accept payment by bank transfer, credit card, debit card or PayPal in either Sterling or Euros. If you purchase through Selling Antiques you can either request a delivery quote from us before payment or we will add this once we receive confirmation of your purchase.

General Information

As with all antiques, there may be small normal signs of wear and tear due to the age of a piece and its history. We aim to describe our pieces accurately – please ask for more description and photos if you would like more information. You can see our ranges, important information and terms and conditions on our website www.pyrontique.com.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Art Nouveau clock garniture typically comprises a central timepiece flanked by matching side ornaments, such as candelabra or vases, characterised by naturalistic motifs, flowing lines, and figurative sculpture popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

French clock garnitures of this period were commonly constructed from patinated or gilt bronze, spelter, and carved marble or onyx bases, housing mechanical brass movements with hand-painted enamel dials.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cast metal components with original patination, stamped French mechanical movements, and integrated mounting marks on the marble or metal bases.

Position the complete set as a central focal point along a grand fireplace mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard to add sculptural structure and historical character.

Dust metal components regularly with a soft dry cloth without chemical cleaners, clean marble surfaces using a pH-neutral cleaner, and ensure the mechanical clockwork is serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
