William Trotter (1772-1833) was born into a family of merchants, descended on the maternal side from the family of John Knox. He followed in his father, Thomas Trotter’s footsteps, to become a member of The Merchant Company in 1797 and by 1805 he took over the firm Young & Trotter where he had been junior partner. Accounts from the firm survive for over fifty patrons including Marquesses, Earls, Lords and Baronets.

Often regarded as the greatest and most eminent of all Scottish cabinet makers, his success was in part due to his appreciation for his client's taste. Using the finest quality materials, Trotter developed a distinctive Regency style typically characterised by bold carving, beaded moulding and reeded legs and supplied furnishings to some of Scotland's most important houses and institutions including the Holyrood House, Dumfries House, Mount Stuart, Paxton House, The Advocates Library in Edinburgh, Edinburgh’s Parliament House, Assembly Rooms and Register House. Trotter had showrooms at Princes Street, Edinburgh from 1810 until his death in 1833.

A Regency sofa table is a long, relatively narrow drop-leaf table designed in the early 19th century, typically featuring frieze drawers and supported on a central pedestal or trestle legs with splayed feet.

Scottish Regency furniture of this caliber frequently utilised flame mahogany veneers over solid pine or oak carcases, complemented by turned wooden pedestal stems, reeded legs, and brass cap castors.

Authentic Regency tables display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass castors, high-grade timber with natural patina, and distinctive period details such as cockbeading or reeded splayed quadrupod legs.

Position the table directly behind a freestanding sofa or against a long hallway wall, using it to display ceramic lamps, stacked art books, and sculptural decorative objects.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, keep the piece away from direct heat sources or direct sunlight, and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
