Antique Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with Female Nude Enamel, Erotic Art, Lgbt Interest

1900 - 1920
Description

This exceptional antique sterling silver cigarette case showcases a beautifully printed enamel plaque depicting two classical nudes in an interior setting. Made by Joseph Gloster and hallmarked for Birmingham, 1917, the case is a fine example of early 20th century craftsmanship blending technical skill with aesthetic elegance.

The rectangular case features a smooth polished body with linear engine-turned detailing to the reverse, and a richly coloured oval enamel plaque set into the lid. The figures are delicately rendered in soft naturalistic tones against a classical backdrop, with excellent detailing and shading. The interior of the case is fully hallmarked and bears an additional hand-engraved inscription commemorating the "Brighton Tournament, Sept 1920," adding a charming historical note to the piece.

This case would particularly appeal to collectors of fine enamelwork, admirers of sensuous classical art, and those interested in historic LGBT themes, where representations of beauty and intimacy were often celebrated through refined artistic craftsmanship.

Historical Background

Printed enamel techniques were widely developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, allowing artisans to replicate detailed and colourful scenes on small surfaces. Classical nude themes were particularly popular in luxury items during the Belle Époque and early 20th century, reflecting a romanticised view of antiquity.

Measurements

9.2 × 7 × 2 cm

106 g / 3.41 t oz

Interior fits 84 mm king-size cigarettes or cards

Condition

Very good antique condition. The enamel is bright, crisp, and complete, showing only the most minimal signs of age. The silver body has some small age-related dings, as typical for an item of this period, but nothing that detracts from its display or function. The clasp and hinge are in excellent working order, closing the case securely with a satisfying snap.
