Small 18th Century Giltwood Console Table

18th century
Description

A Small 18th Century French or Italian Console Table with Marble Top.

Being of small scale, this lovely table is probably French but an Italian origin is also possible. Executed in giltwood throughout, it is in the rococo style with serpentine apron incorporating a central shell and the legs formed of a combination of stacked C scrolls joined with a small stretcher to the back. The moulded marble top is attractive in colour and figure, incorporating shades of brown, red, cream and white. It is shaped to match the form of the table, something that would have been difficult to achieve and therefore correspondingly expensive. The decoration on the table consists of leaf and scrollwork and some panelling on the frieze either side of the shell.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed to stand flat against a wall, these tables originated during the Baroque and Rococo periods in Europe, serving as decorative display surfaces often positioned beneath matching pier mirrors in formal reception rooms.

Rococo console tables were typically hand-carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf, before being fitted with carved or imported marble tops.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved wooden joinery, natural shrinkage marks in the timber, hand-cut marble undersides, and legitimate wear to the water gilding that often reveals the clay bole underneath.

Position the piece in an entryway or narrow hallway beneath modern art or a minimalist mirror to create a striking contrast between historic carving details and clean contemporary architecture.

Dust gently using a soft dry ostrich feather duster or brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or chemical polishes, which can dissolve the water-soluble gesso layer and permanently strip the delicate gold leaf.
