Early 20th Century English Fairground Carousel Panel

1900 - 1920
Description

Early 20th century English fairground carousel central fragment

A hand carved example of a vibrant and highly decorative fairground carousel central mirror panel. With its original mirror still in place, with typical naïve hand-crafted wooden sections. Layered paint and with its original hanging hook still in place at the reverse. An un-touched example with natural age wear and loss as shown. It would look wonderful in a cool hallway entrance in our humble opinion.

Size in inches: H 47” x W 18” x D 4”

Origin: England

Date: Early 20th Century

Condition: Aged

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique fairground carousel panel is a decorative timber section created to trim the rounding boards, centre shafts, or chariots of fairground rides during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These panels feature hand-carved motifs and vibrant painted schemes designed to draw attention under showground lighting.

Fairground panels were traditionally carved from durable hardwoods or softwoods such as pine and lime wood. They were finished with multi-layered lead-based paints, silver or gold leaf gilding, and often inset with cut glass mirrors or glass cabochons to amplify reflective light.

Authentic pieces display evidence of practical fairground use, including layered paint history from seasonal repainting, structural fixings on the reverse, and genuine craquelure or flaking paint surface. Carvings from the early 20th century exhibit hand-tool marks rather than modern machine precision.

These decorative elements serve as focal architectural salvage mounted directly onto neutral walls in entryways, living rooms, or hallways. Pairing dramatic polychrome folk art with contemporary minimalist furnishings creates a balanced contrast of texture and historical narrative.

Keep the panel in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture to prevent paint flaking or timber warping. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush, avoiding chemical solvents or water that could damage fragile, original paint layers.
