Mid 19th Century Chess Top Lamp Table

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century, William IV Period, Mahogany Lamp Table, Or Occasional Table, Having Superbly Figured Circular Top With Attractive Chess Board Inlaid Decoration, Raised On Reverse Tapering, Faceted, Column With Finely Carved Collar, To Triform Base With Original Carved Paw Feet.

This lovely quality little occasional table dates to the late regency, or william iv period and is a very attractive little thing indeed. Quite intentionally constructed using high end mahogany timbers, one would imagine because the maker knew that would help it to last when being used heavily, it remains in excellent condition and has great elegance to it.

Of course there is also the added bonus of having a chess board inlaid to the top, which allows one to have a quick game whenever they may fancy. The chess board, as with the rest of the table, is excellently executed and really does add to the piece overall.

Overall, as mentioned above, this 19th century games table is in quite excellent condition and has clearly been both well loved and well used throughout its life. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed onto sale, ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th century games tables typically feature detailed timber veneers, marquetry or parquetry tops crafted for chess or draughts, and central faceted pedestals supported by shaped bases.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, combining these with contrasting timber veneers such as satinwood and boxwood to form the inlaid checkerboard pattern.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-cut joinery, subtle wood shrinkage along the inlay seam lines, hand-carved detailing on the base, and original timber patination on the stem and feet.

These compact accent pieces function as occasional side tables beside an armchair, placed within a reading nook, or positioned as a decorative focal point in a hallway.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer cracking, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
