Antique Victorian Mahogany Fold Over Tea Occasional Side Lamp Table with Concealed Storage Compartment

19th century
Description

A charming antique Victorian mahogany fold over tea occasional side lamp table dating from around 1880. Beautifully proportioned and exceptionally versatile, this elegant table was originally designed as a tea table but today is equally suited as an occasional table, side table or lamp table, making it a practical addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The beautifully figured D-shaped top folds open to create a circular surface, providing space for serving afternoon tea, displaying a table lamp or decorative objects. Beneath, the top lifts to reveal a concealed storage compartment neatly housed within the deep bow-fronted frieze. Retaining its original working lock and key, the compartment provides convenient storage for tea accessories, coasters, cutlery, correspondence or other small household items.

Raised on four elegant tapering legs terminating in traditional pad feet, the table displays the restrained elegance and fine craftsmanship associated with quality Victorian furniture. The rich mahogany has developed a beautiful warm colour and mellow patina over more than 160 years, enhancing the attractive grain and timeless appeal of the piece.

Compact in size yet highly practical, this delightful table would be equally at home in a drawing room, sitting room, hallway, bedroom or study, offering both decorative charm and useful concealed storage.

Condition

Excellent antique condition with age-related wear, marks and a beautiful mellow patina consistent with age and use. The table is solid and sturdy throughout, and the concealed storage compartment retains its original working lock and key.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, a fold-over tea table features a hinged top that opens to double its surface area for serving tea or playing games, or folds flat to rest against a wall as a space-saving console.

Victorian craftsmen primarily used solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers, fitted with brass hinges, internal storage compartments, and hand-turned or tapered timber legs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, natural timber patination, flush-set brass hinges, and a gateleg or swivel-leg mechanism to support the opened leaf.

When closed, the compact demi-lune form serves as an entryway console, hallway side table, or lamp stand, while unfolding the top provides additional surface space for entertaining.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to feed the wood, ensuring the table is kept away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage.
