The piece showcases the traditional Kutani color palette of red, gold, and white, framed by a signature red border known as Akae, which is characteristic of Kutani ware. The central motif of the vase features a finely detailed scene of three figures, likely noblemen or scholars, dressed in luxurious kimonos adorned with golden embellishments and intricate patterns that signify high social status.
The lid of the vase is topped with a finely crafted Foo Dog (Shishi), a traditional guardian creature symbolizing protection and good fortune, accentuated with gilded details. On the base, there is a red-painted mark in cursive script, partially faded, which reads "Kutani zo" (???), meaning “Made by Kutani”.
Kutani ware, particularly pieces from the 19th century, is highly sought after in the antique market, reflecting the cultural and artistic revival of Japan during the Meiji period and the increasing Western demand for Japanese decorative arts.
