An extremely fine and rare earthenware bust of the Methodist preacher John Wesley. This was first modelled from life by the celebrated potter Enoch Wood of Burslem, Staffordshire, in 1781, and earned the approval of Wesley and his followers. This example is among the earliest known and produced in 1784 when Wesley was eighty-one years old. It is the most expressive example that I''ve ever seen and is of museum quality. This model was used in countless copies by many firms throughout the following decades. Excellent colouring and condition.
The reverse bears a medallion;
''The Revd John Wesley MA. Aged 81
E. Wood. Sculp. Burslem''.
For a history of Enoch Wood''s models of Wesley and others see ''The Wood Family of Burslem'', Frank Falkner, London 1912.
